Polygon Secures Discord Channel After Phishing Attack Compromise

Polygon’s Discord channel was compromised on Saturday, August 24, but the blockchain platform’s brass gained access to it after about four hours.

Mudit Gupta, chief information security officer at Polygon Polygon ( MATIC), issued a warning to X.com users to not click “any links” within the official Discord channel.

One Polygon user, shadabk2005, who goes by the X handle, expressed concern that scam links had been posted on the channel.

PSA: Do not click on any links in the @0xPolygon community discord until further notice.

It has been compromised and we’re trying to get back ownership.— Mudit Gupta (@Mudit__Gupta) August 24, 2024

The incident raised concerns among Polygon users, with one member going by the X handle shadabk2005 saying that scam links were being posted on the channel.

@0xPolygon hey is your discord hacked? There are scam links being posted in the announcements channel and I got a timeout for highlighting this in the support channel.— shadab.eth ✈️🏨 (@shadabk2005) August 24, 2024

There was no further information about the incident.

Gupta updated his post about four hours later. He informed users that Polygon had “regained control” over the channel, and was making changes to prevent a repeat of the attack.

Update: We’ve regained access and currently cleaning up all the changes made by the hacker to make sure they can’t come back.— Mudit Gupta (@Mudit__Gupta) August 24, 2024

Discord, a free messaging app, has become popular among crypto communities. It is also used by X, Telegram, and Reddit. Scammers have also taken notice of the fact that projects use Discord to share vital information.

In July, bad actors took over the ownership of Ethereum liquid remaking platform Renzo’s Discord channel. It was not clear at the time if anyone had lost money as a consequence of the hack.

Hackers added a false discord link to the website of CertiK, a security auditing company. The link, according to the people who stumbled upon the trick led to a fake Discord Server that hosted malicious software to drain money from wallets.

CertiK announced in September 2023 that scammers had made more than $ 6 million through attacks launched via compromised crypto Discord channels. The attackers used the channels primarily to spam fake tokens airdrops. They also included phishing links in the airdrop links.
