MapleStory, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) developed by South Korean video game publisher Nexon with over 400,000 daily active users, will expand to Avalanche Blockchain technology for enhanced gaming experiences.
An announcement dubbed MapleStory N on March 11 noted it would use an Avalanche subnet on its respective blockchain cloud network “without needing separate implementation partners, providing greater convenience, more support options and faster time to market” while offering users new content-generating opportunities. “Users can build out exciting new worlds while expanding gameplay and contributing their footprint to the MapleStory Universe,” wrote Avalanche spokesperson Sarah Hoy.
“Working with Ava Labs will allow us to establish a complete blockchain ecosystem, providing secure service for multiple dApps along with MapleStory N, which will boost competitiveness,” stated Angela Son, MapleStory Universe Partnership Lead.
MapleStory was first created in 2003, quickly becoming immensely popular throughout the Asia-Pacific region and exceeding 180 million registered players. Since 2015, its Web3 venture, MapleStory Universe, has employed various nonfungible tokens (NFTs) to improve player experiences in-game.
On March 22, 2023, Maplestory parent Nexon decided to utilize Polygon Lab’s Ethereum layer-2 scaling solution as its blockchain infrastructure solution for Maplestory’s blockchain ecosystem. According to Nexon, a supernet created by Polygon Labs will be deployed within Maplestory so players can earn and collect items as NFTs.
